March Update

Hello everyone,

We've had an incredibly busy month, even with March Break in the middle of it.  We would like to welcome Mlle Doret, our new French teacher.  She has joined the Fieldcrest staff and we are thrilled to have her as our Intermediate Division's French teacher. Also, today, we welcomed our visiting students from Mexico with an assembly - they'll be staying with host families for the next couple of weeks, while enjoying some of the attractions of our beautiful province.

Final Grad Trip information has come home - final payments and paperwork are due by this Friday, March 30th.  The remaining balance (for most students) is $268.  Please make cheques payable to Fieldcrest Elementary School.  If you send in cash, please look for a receipt to come home indicating that your payment was received.  Please ensure that all paperwork is fully completed and that student signatures are included where necessary.

We've begun a new Lunch Sign Out procedure in our classrooms.  Instead of students signing out at the front foyer at the beginning of lunches, we've got the students signing out in the classroom - this way we can more closely monitor students' locations during the designated break.  At this point in the year, if you would like to switch your child's red or yellow card to a green card, please send a note to the school indicating so.  I'll happily add his or her name to the "green card list".  If your child is going to be leaving school property for lunch, we must have parental or guardian permission in writing.  Thank you for your consideration about this.

Upcoming in our classrooms:
Language - We've finished reading our novel, Unwind.  In the upcoming weeks, we'll be completing activities that relate to the novel.  The assignment that students will get this week will be to create a timeline of the story from the perspective of one of the three main characters.
Math - We are in the middle of an Algebra unit right now.  Students have an assessment at the end of this week.
History - Students are completing a multi-media project on Louis Riel.  The project is to be done mostly at school and is expected to be finished by Friday of this week.
Geography - Students received an assignment on Monday of this week regarding Economic Systems of Canada and other countries.  Students compared the economies of Singapore and North Korea, and for the second part of the assignment, students are to complete a table comparing Canada's economic system to that of a country of their choice.  We will not be working on this assignment until Monday of next week, so students are strongly encouraged to have their research (of Canada's and their chosen country's economic information) at school for that day. All research is expected to be completed at home.

Thanks for reading!  I hope that you've been enjoying the warm weather (even though we've had a bit of a backslide).  If you have any questions about any of the above, please e-mail me at sskelton@mail1.scdsb.on.ca or skelton.fes@gmail.com at any time.

Miss Skelton :)
